Improvisation at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Adelaide
I couldn't not put up a video demonstrating the chamades and more-or-less full organ sound at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Adelaide. The structure of this improvisation is somewhat free in nature, but it was one of those enjoyable moments where I simply let my fingers go wherever they wanted and I pretty much just sat back and enjoyed the sounds this wonderful organ could produce.

Bach - Ich Ruf' Zu Dir, Herr Jesu Christ, BWV 639

A sample of this piece generated much more interest on my video 'Introduction to the Pipe Organ' than I expected, and to celebrate crossing 100,000 views on that video I decided to record it in full while out of town for my RSCM conference. View my video 'Introduction to the Pipe Organ' here: ua-cam.com/video/NGNOopA4Qfc/v-deo.html Recorded on the Knud Smenge organ at The Church of the Epiphany...

Here is another setting of Nun Komm' from 'The Eighteen' collection, again recorded on the organ at The Church of the Epiphany in Crafers. For the best recording I have ever seen of this see the following performance by the late John Scott: ua-cam.com/video/Iq6PHDHguDw/v-deo.html I just had to record these here and is why I didn't upload these during Advent! As I said before, this is probably t...
Bach - Nun Komm' Der Heiden Heiland, BWV 659

Recorded on the most wonderfully responsive and musical instrument in, quite possibly, the whole state of South Australia: the Knud Smenge organ at The Church of the Epiphany, Crafers. This is honestly the best organ I think I have ever played.
Full Organ at Sacred Heart Cathedral

Someone wanted to hear what full organ sounded like. You really need to hear it in person because the tubas are so loud that once you add them you can barely hear the Contra Bombarde on the recording!
Guilmant - Finale from Sonata No. 1 in D Minor, Op. 42

Postlude for Easter Sunday Choral Mass, 2016. The video contains some photos from the Mass as the camera ran out of storage space and stopped recording a couple of times. In the time my wife quickly made space to resume recording, my father was in the nave recording too and I have used some of that footage also. What can I say? I was forced to improvise this video!

A beautiful chorale prelude on the well-known chorale 'O Sacred Head'. The theme is played in the pedals on an 8' reed coupled from the Swell. Appropriate for the Lenten season.

I certainly did enjoy your demonstration and explanation of how the organ stops work and well I have played the pipe organ by ear with Lord of the Dance and I loved how it sounded and our church had Opposite colors on the keys. Blacks were white and whites were brown. Quite a cool instrument I have always loved hearing a pipe organ played and even more interesting on the other side is how they roll the pipes. So beautiful.

The fastest organ version so far and I like that. Most versions are too slow to my liking. So its great to hear a fast one (heard about a dozen and a half so far). Cheers! 😊

Not exactly a piece I would have chosen to play on such a small organ, clearly designed for liturgical accompaniment.Very well played but only a demonstration of that particular organ as apposed to a performance.

There's was a time when Guilmant's organ music curiously fell out of fashion. During those years a number of teachers still recognized the quality of his writing and predicted that his music, because it was so well composed, would one day make a big comeback. Listening to this young man's playing makes one realize that this comeback has been fully realized. A very fine performance of some beautiful writing for the organ ! Thank you Samuel for the wonderful playing !

I love that I can actually hear what the treble cleff is playing succinctly in this. Many other pieces on youtube the bass cleff drowns out what the right hand is playing. There's just little bits of Guilmant's magic here and there, like the melody the right hand does at 0:11 that is simply drowned out in so many other videos.

Thank you so much for playing one of Bach's most beautiful and subtle compositions. I played this often as a young man, and unfortunately am old now and can't anymore. You are the real thing among organists!

Hi Samuel, you are an amazing organist! I have watched a lot of your other performances. They are all breathtaking and beautiful. Thank you for this instructional video. I am an absolute beginner organist. Looking for help on how the stops, pistons, etc work. Do you have other instructional videos on how to work the organ?

Are the stops indicated on the sheet music or is it left to the discretion of the organist? If that’s the case, then the organist is significantly instrumental in the composition of the music. This has got to be the most complicated instrument of them all.

My musical training is on the piano and violin. The organ is an instrument of immense mystery to me. So powerful, yet controlled by a single man. I will admit, even after your video, I am still not sure how all these pieces work together to create the sound, but your passion for it is clear.
